When Alan Cryer first began to build his Business Park many years ago he didn't ever envision it growing so large.

At the time there was little demand for rural offices and he thought he would do well to fill just the one dedicated office building he had designed and built with his wife Lynn.

He invested in a fibre optic internet line long before anyone really knew what that term meant (except Alan and anyone withing the IT field) He spent time getting it right. He used his experience in high end furniture to finish his rural offices with solid oak doors lending a feel and sense of luxury. When people thought of rural offices back then they thought of drafty converted barns and rickety tin sheds. Alan wanted to change all this and he dedicated himself to making Oakwood Park Business Centre a high quality, yet friendly, business centre.

It wasn't long before the first building was full and to Alan's surprise rural offices turned out to be more popular than he had expected. Conveniences such as lots of easy free parking and fresh air, which a countryside location can offer with ease, made coming to work a pleasure for tenants and visitors.

Outdoor seating in stunning grounds meant everyone got a healthy dose of green space, a benefit that scientists hadn't even discovered back then, but that Alan instinctively recognised. It was important to him to not just make something servicable, but something beautiful too. His efficient nature took on any challenges and addressed them one by one. Planning for any possibility he installed a back up power generator for his rural offices - no one wants to be caught in the dark after all. To his disappointment there hasn't been a power cut during office hours since!

Alan continues to be involved with Oakwood Park on a day to day basis and his wonderful stories and great sense of humour help to keep Oakwood Park the place it is today.

Let's get down to brass tacks. The first question that always comes up is about the price. Can you afford a small office?

Well if you eat out regularly or go on regular nights out then yes, there's a good chance you can afford a small office. Monthly and yearly prices can look intimidating but when you consider where your money goes, a small office becomes much more affordable.

According to the Mail online the average Brit spends (are you ready for this?) a whopping £2,210 a year in coffee shops. Yes. That's right. £2,210 a year. That's a good chunk towards finding yourself in a lovely small office instead.

So the cat is banished from the house, and while you're up you may as well get lunch and do some housework. When Alan Cryer initially built his house on site with his wife Lynn they envisioned a future together making high quality, hardwood furniture. As his work gained popularity Alan was able to reinvest in the business by building The Gables and The Courtyard as additional workshop space. As time passed Alan decided to put his eye for detail and practical skills to a new use and he and his wife worked with a building team to create The Clocktower. This was the first building specifically designed as offices. As a businessman himself he recognised a need for out of town serviced offices which freed people up to do what they did best in a relaxing countryside environment. The need to spend hours on the phone chasing utility companies and maintenance men became a thing of the past for the professionals that took one of these high quality offices.

Recognising what is needed

With lots of easy free carparking and great security The Clocktower soon filled with happy people and Alan began to convert some of his other buildings to offices to meet a growing demand. One by one the buildings filled and Alan added The Elms and then The Pines to the list of available offices. Each building was designed to add something new or different to the available offices. Some had shared kitchens, others had private kitchens, some were upstairs with velux windows and some were ground floor with good disabled access. There are open plan offices, suites of offices or small, private offices.

Alan held true to his values of honesty and quality and each office has it's own alarm system, controlled contactless keyfob access, opening windows, bright lighting and well maintained decor. As the business centre grew Alan and Lynn's children, Adam and Helen, began to help out more and more. Adam inherited his father's keen eye for detail and helps maintain the site to a high standard, and Helen works as business centre manager helping everything to run smoothly on a day to day basis.

The frost is sparkling on the grass and the bright sunshine is slowly melting the ice here this morning. It’s a beautiful day to be working in such stunning surroundings.
